Lunch tablesThis was confusing.
Everyone sat at tables for lunch, talking amongst each other. Bishop students mixed with Queens and Pawns, so it wasn't a matter of classes. There was the rare black and white student sitting side by side, so it wasn't about sides. It was strange and Jolene didn't quite understand. This was her first time not eating in alone in a cafeteria, so maybe that was to be expected.
Elementary school forced children to sit in their classes. There were two tables per class, and the children further divided into male and female. Jolene learned the hard way that it was not that simple. From there, it was divided into peer groups. Jolene was not in school enough to make friends, due to constant sickness. She sat alone at the edge of the table, watching the other girls eat, listening to them talk. She observed, but she didn't quite understand. They all seemed to be friends, but how? But why?
